Snow Storm Take II

We got our second large dumping of snow on Friday, and as any normal person would do, I grabbed my cameras and headed downtown to do some street photography.

Friday marked the maiden voyage of my Mamiya C3, we’ll have to wait for me to get the film developed to see how atrociously I messed that up. It’s been about 4 years since I shot film, and this is the first time I’ve ever used 120 film (or a twin lens reflex, for that matter). Nevertheless, it was fun to shoot on film again (many thanks to Joel Kowsky for the film purchasing advice).

Starved Rock

Had to take Aaron to the airport this morning at 5am, and seeing as how I probably couldn’t will myself to wake up that early any other time, I decided to make the most of it and drive down to Starved Rock State Park.

I’ve been feeling a little antsy lately, cooped up I suppose. Had mostly design work and not too many photo assignments the past two weeks, and I always get that way when the scale is tipped towards computer work.

Anyways, since it was 5am, and I was already 30 minutes down the road, I decided to drive another 1.5 hrs over the the park. I’ve been wanting to go there for a while now. It was a brisk 15 degrees out today, sunny, and beautiful. Did my first snow donuts in a parking lot. That was fun. Stupid Subaru’s and their all wheel drive makes donuts harder though. Pfff.

And of course, as soon as I was two hours outside of town I got a call from the Tribune to see if I could go cover a fire that broke out. Oh well.

I hiked two of the canyons at Starved Rock today, Ottowa and Kaskaskia. Here’s a collection of images.

Snow Storm Street Shooting

Got the first snow storm of the year (also of my life) today. I’ve got about 5 inches of snow on the tree branches outside my window, so I’m going to assert that that’s how much snow we got. It’s still coming down, and should keep on dumping for at least overnight, maybe into tomorrow and Saturday.

I went downtown to see a dance concert today, and managed to do a little snow storm street shooting (say that 5 times fast) while I was down there.

Sunday

This one is a little delayed. I’ve been doing a lot of programming the past few days, and as a result have avoided being on the computer after work, so as not to recount terrible memories of javascript.

Anyways, these were taken on Sunday after church, walking around downtown running errands. Going back downtown tomorrow, so I’ll try to do some more street photography while I’m down there.

Man. I’ve been feeling inspired lately or something. Third straight day doing street shooting. I took the train over to Belmont today, walked over to the water, and walked down through Lincoln Park until I got to Fullerton, then completed the loop. It was a little unnerving walking through the park and seeing the ice melting, flowers budding, and birds swimming, but man was it pretty out today.

Ordering some 120mm film for my Mamiya C3 soon. That’ll be fun to take out and do street photography with. Stay tuned for that.

Tonight’s subject was trains. Trains going by, ambulances crossing train tracks, and people on the trains.

Admittedly, there is an inherent risk photographing people on trains. I’m pretty sneaky, but you can’t exactly run away if someone gets agitated with you.

Looks like I’ll live to fight another day though.

I did some street photography downtown today after getting lunch with Scott Strazzante. He gave me some good pointers and let me in on his method (which helped assuage my fear that I was supposed to walk up to people and snap a picture in their face). Let’s just say I didn’t realize his blog name reflected his method quite so literally. I think I’m going to make a habit of doing street photography more often.

Here’s to a new year, and new possibilities.

In Florida for the week for my sister’s masters graduation ceremony in Gainesville. Snapped this one from the backyard of my parent’s house in St. Augustine, overlooking the golf course. I realized how much I miss seeing the stars in the night sky.

My digital world has started to get to me. When I’m not taking digital photographs, I’m usually programming something on my computer, and if I’m not doing that, I’m probably reading the Tribune or CNN on my iPad, or checking in somewhere on FourSquare. I’m typing this on a laptop right now, for heaven’s sake. I’ve started to miss sitting in a darkroom, headphones in, developing prints. Sitting in a sculpture lab creating something with my hands. Everything has started to seem too easy. I could manually color correct my photos, or I could press ‘auto’ and probably get the same results. I miss the skillset that used to be required with photography. I could hand code a website, but someone else could probably do as good with a template service or a WYSIWYG editor. The art in my life has been replaced with technology that is getting increasingly simple to use. Not that I’m feeling obsolete at 23. Not yet, at least.

So that led me to attempt to reintroduce some art into my life. I’ve turned all of my artistic passions into professions, and now I love my jobs, but don’t have many artistic endeavors. Even when I’m taking pictures for fun, I’m uploading them to Facebook or this blog, and they become in essence a marketing ploy.

So I started sketching again. Not that I’ve ever been a huge fan of drawing, primarily because I’m awful at it, but it takes me back to a simpler time: freshman year. The other day my roommate walked in on me sitting in the living room alone, in the dark, sketching my coffee mug lit by an Alien Bee with the modeling lamp turned on. Now he thinks I’m weird too.

I think where I’m going with this is the papercut that I made recently, and intend to make more of. I’m not sure if it will become a series or just a collection of random images that I like, but we’ll see where it goes. The first one I made is based off of an image that I took whilst visiting Chicago back in May. The reason that I’ve always been drawn to papercuts is that I get to use it as an extension of my photography. I don’t get to sit in a darkroom and develop my film anymore, but that doesn’t mean that the art of photography has to stop with importing into the computer now. It lets me create something with my hands again, and that feels good.
